Stockholm visit of Ms Judit Varga, Hungary’s Minister of Justice (18 October 2021)

Hungarian Minister of Justice and EU Affairs Ms. Judit Varga met with Sweden’s Minister for European Affairs, Mr. Hans Dahlgren in Stockholm on 18 October 2021 to discuss current issues on the European Union's agenda, such as the EU's Fit for 55 climate package, the future of Europe, migration, the EU minimum wage, the rule of law and the position concerning the decision of the Polish Constitutional Court. At the initiative of our embassy, the two ministers took part in a hybrid format panel discussion about the two countries’ positions and priorities regarding the future of Europe at the Europe House in Stockholm. Minister Judit Varga emphasized the active participation of Hungarians in the debate on the future of Europe and the high number of events organized in Hungary, proving the commitment of Hungary and Hungarians to the EU. He emphasized that Hungary did not want more European Union but a smarter one. Although Hungary and Sweden reject a union that would be based on federalist principles, both agree on a more efficient, responsible organization that serves the interests of citizens and companies even more. The EU institutions must remain within the confines of the powers conferred on them by the Treaties and it is the representatives of the Member States who must take political decisions. Minister Varga presented the Hungarian government's seven-point proposal to support an EU based on strong nation states.

Minister Judit Varga also had talks with the Swedish Secretary of State for Justice Ms. Catharina Espmark, with whom she discussed issues related to judicial co-operation and the Swedish EU Presidency in 2023.
